FoB Business Administration Departmental Seminars: Market-Making Strategies in Tanzimat Era Istanbul
Date: January 22, 2025 - Wednesday
Time: 16:00
Place: Online
Speaker: Çağrı Yalkın – ODTÜ Kıbrıs
Drawing upon advertisements from the Armeno-Turkish newspaper Manzume-i Efkâr of the Tanzimat era (1839–1876), this discussion will reveal the symbolic work undertaken by advertisers in market making. In charting how advertisements were used as market-making devices, the presentation will illuminate how businesses utilized standardized marketing communications, forged intermediary networks, and legitimized new products to introduce new offerings to the local market. The seminar will also critically assess the extent of cosmopolitanism in the Ottoman marketplace, questioning whether these efforts engaged a diverse consumer base or catered to a more limited audience. This analysis offers valuable perspectives on the historical dynamics of market making and consumer culture in a pivotal period of the late Ottoman Empire.
